The backstory, or how I am here as proprietor of Wildflower Graphics 1 – the “1” signaling a new chapter for Wildflower Graphics—established formally c. 2005, by Richard (“Richie”; 1955-2026) and Lynne Bittner (1957-2016). We were all High School friends; in fact, I dated Richie briefly, and I initially introduced Lynne to Richie. My life drifted far apart from theirs for about two decades (though we were aware, within a larger circle of old friends, that all were thriving on our paths).
In the 1990s, Lynne and Richie built a house (and several workshop spaces) on a site along the Battenkill River in Greenwich, New York (Washington County). While raising a daughter, they focused on writing and performing music (aka the Wildflower Band* [email for more info]) and ran a custom cabinetry business that engaged, among other things, their visual arts backgrounds. As Lynne developed a particular interest in design directions of the nineteenth-century Arts & Crafts movement, and Richie became interested in emerging digital design, Wildflower Graphics was born—at first, primarily as producer of note cards with botanical illustrations. From the regional art fair circuit to the global digital marketplace, the business grew to include copious card lines, decorative prints, and unique gift offerings. Tragically, Lynn became ill and passed in 2016—which ultimately led to my reconnection with Richie (and other of our High School friends). Subsequently, we married and, as an artist (and art historian) myself with interest in nature subjects, I became integrally involved with Wildflower Graphics. Richie took joy in both its continuity and evolution—until tragedy struck again, and he succumbed to a sudden illness. In my grief, I am dedicated to a “third act” for the Wildflower lineage that was such a proud part of his identity. Richie truly thought of his customers as friends—and vice versa (so to speak), with overlapping interests. While Lynne and I (in succession) are responsible for most Wildflower imagery, Richie was the artistic director and technical master that pulled together a Wildflower Graphics aesthetic in the collaborative tradition of of “studio identity” epitomized by the practices of William Morris.
